This was a good interview on the Sable offshore platform with Secretary Doug Burgum and Secretary Chris Wright on the importance and impact of the implementation of the Defense Production Act on California Oil. Make no mistake. There is still work to be done as the new legislation that Gov Newsom is putting in will shut down the remaining 7 refineries and force them out of business due to the overreach and regulatory burdens.
If that happens, if the remaining refineries close, this could be devastating for the Entire United States – the second order of effects and impacts could take the United States down.
We covered many of those regulations in this article, “California Extends Its Key Climate Programs, Condemning the State to High Energy Prices.”
1. Sable Oil Project (California Offshore Drilling)
The interview centers on the Sable oil project off the California coast, which Governor Newsom opposes. The secretaries argue that reactivating idle wells drilled decades ago can increase California’s oil production by 20% and enhance energy security for military facilities in the state.
2. Energy Security & National Security
A key concern is California’s dependency on foreign oil imports—60% of the state’s oil comes from overseas, with Iraq being the top importer as of February 2026. The secretaries frame domestic oil production as essential for national security, particularly given Middle East tensions.
3. Energy Prices & Cost of Living
The discussion emphasizes how California’s strict energy policies drive up gasoline and diesel prices for consumers compared to other states. The secretaries argue that increased domestic production would lower energy costs for Californians and support affordability across the nation.
4. Environmental & Safety Concerns
Secretary Burgum addresses ecological concerns, asserting that modern drilling technology allows for safe, clean offshore operations and that environmental regulations should support domestic production rather than forcing reliance on foreign sources.
5. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) Management
Secretary Wright defends the current SPR strategy, criticizing the Biden administration for drawing 200+ million barrels and explaining the current approach of trading barrels to replenish reserves while meeting market needs.
6. Coal Energy & Power Generation
The secretaries discuss Trump’s $700 million coal initiative, arguing that operating coal plants meet strict emission standards and that coal remains a reliable, affordable energy source for powering America and supporting AI development competitiveness against China.
7. Energy Policy Philosophy: “Energy Abundance” vs. “Energy Transition”
A central theme is the contrast between Trump’s “energy addition” and “energy dominance” approach versus the previous administration’s “energy transition,” which the secretaries characterize as energy subtraction due to reliance on intermittent, weather-dependent, and subsidized sources.
