A Palau-flagged product tanker, Yi Cheng 6, experienced a major engine room fire and total power failure while transiting the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was en route from Kandla Port in India to Shinas, Oman, when the incident occurred on Sunday, June 29.
Responding to a distress call, the Indian Navy dispatched the stealth frigate INS Tabar, currently deployed in the region, to render assistance. All 14 crewmembers onboard the tanker, all Indian nationals, were safely rescued.
According to a statement from the Indian Navy, its firefighting team, along with some of the ship’s crew, managed to bring the fire under control. The firefighting operation involved 13 Indian naval personnel and 5 of the tanker’s crew.
The 2003-built Yi Cheng 6 is registered as owned by a Hong Kong-based company, Lucky Impact, which also operates a supramax bulk carrier.
