A fire broke out aboard an oil tanker undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Batam on Monday, killing four workers and injuring five others.

The blaze ignited in the afternoon of June 24 aboard the Federal II, a 1990-built aframax tanker serving as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit. The vessel was docked at ASL Shipyard at the time of the incident.

According to local authorities, the fire erupted while workers were inside the ship’s oil storage tanks. All nine were Indonesians carrying out repair work on the vessel.

Of the five survivors, four reportedly sustained severe burns and are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

Emergency crews battled the flames for several hours before bringing the fire under control. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Shipping databases show the vessel as owned by Indonesia-registered PT Eastern Jason and under full management of Monaco-based International Andromeda Shipping.
